WordPress weekly photo challenge: Near and far

Taking pictures of something close with an interesting (but not distracting) background is often a challenge. A few months ago, when wildflowers were blooming all around town, I spent some time at a local park to take pictures of them and the scenery, trying to show perspective. I’m not sure I managed to do it, so I’ll let you judge. You can see more of my photos on my photography website.

Here’s a nice patch of colorful wildflowers, with a typical San Diego hill in the background.

I liked the fence so I tried to play around with it to show how far it went.

The next photo shows a glimpse of the San Diego River in the background.

I took the last picture during our recent vacation to Idyllwild, California. I love the large pine trees you can find everywhere in the forest and how small you feel when standing at the bottom. The lightning is all wrong for this picture – there’s nothing worse than trying to take photos towards the sky in the middle of the day, but it gives you an idea of how far up these trees can reach. Nature never stops amazing me.

  1. I’ve never been into poetry, but I now follow some bloggers that make me appreciate the process (though I don’t want to write it myself). Likewise, I’ve never been into photography, but your blog makes me appreciate the power of this art form. Not only are your photos brilliant, but you offer just enough description of the process to help a novice like me understand it without giving a how-to manual.

I think you’ve captured the near and far concept beautifully. In fact, this may be one of my favorites. For some reason, the fence shot really grabs me.

Thanks for opening my eyes to new things. :)

    • You’re welcome and thank you for your appreciation! I can’t imagine how many people have walked by that fence (it’s a looped walking path by football and coccer fields) and never stopped to really “look” at it. I think the best photographs often use the simplest subjects but help people see the beauty in simplicity. Beauty really is all around us, and all it takes to switching your point of view / perspective to appreciate it.

      • I’m not much of a picture-taker, but the one thing I do like to photograph on vacation (besides my kids) are doors. Some of those European doors are wonderful. I’ve seen great doors in Malta and Nice and Italy. I’ve just noticed this on our last few trips, so I think I’ll try to be more focused in the future. Maybe keep a photo album of door shots. :)

      • That’s a great idea! Doors and windows (especially when they have colorful shutters, which are inexistent in the US, even with all the storms and hurricanes!) can great subject. I also like to photograph through a door or window (inside to outside, or the opposite), using it as a frame. It makes for some cool pictures. Oh, and narrow streets are nice too! Gosh, you make me want to fly to Paris right now to take some pictures!

      • Oh, yes, I also enjoy taking photos of narrow streets, the kind you don’t find in the US. And that book “Bringing Up Bebe” is making me want to head right over to Paris as well!

  2. These are great – I love the trees!

  3. Beautifully done! I like how you captured Near and Far in each of your photos. :)

  4. All are beautiful photos, especially the top one. I’d have guessed those trees were redwoods, surprised to see that they are pine trees.

    • Thank you for the compliment! They definitely are pine trees, as we don’t have redwoods in Southern California. And I LOVE the smell of pine as we walk through the woods. I used to enjoy pine trees right in San Diego County until the last two major wildfires burned down about a third of the county. Now I have to drive a little while to appreciate them but it’s all worth it.

  5. Great shots for the theme, milka! Especially love #2 . . . with the fence stretching from NEAR to FAR.

    • Thank you! I took that shot months ago but it was the first one I thought about when I saw the theme. It’s funny how each commenter prefers a different photo in this post. Not everybody’s mind gets tickled the same way.

  6. I especially loved the first and last shot. Beautiful photos.
