Beautiful life, beautiful world, beautiful time

As I was going through my car’s glove box this morning to remove the many paper napkins that have piled up over the past few months, I realized I have a few music CDs in there. And I’ve been so busy with life, I can’t remember the last time I listened to any of them. I found a few Sting CDs in the pile, James Blunt, Keane, and a CD with various songs, including one I had completely forgotten about.

It’s called Beautiful Life by the band Fisher. Part of the song has been used for several TV commercials over the past seven years. This song, Beautiful Life, is just… beautiful. If you every need a pick-me-up, this song will do it, every time. I myself can’t listen to it without humming, singing, and smiling from ear to ear, thinking about my two kids. Because this song is all about showing your kids how beautiful life is, how beautiful the world around us is, how to seize the day, look around and notice the small things. And Kathy Fisher, the band’s singer, has one of the most beautiful, purest voices I’ve ever heard. She’s one of those singers who sing with her heart, not her gut.

I’ll let you enjoy this song, so you can tell me what you think. It’s just too beautiful not to share. Then scroll down and hear what other Fisher songs I really like.

Several years ago, Fisher wrote a 30-second song for the San Diego Zoo called Only One You. It’s pure bliss, and it gives me the chills every time I watch this commercial

Feel free to read more about the band Fisher and listen to more of their music on the Fisher website. And I dare you to listen to the song “I Will Love You” while thinking about someone who’s not with you anymore without crying. It’s one of those very sad songs that somehow makes you feel better, if you know what I mean.

A dose of motherly love

Motherly Love by Frederick Morgan

Motherly Love by Frederick Morgan

I know Father’s Day is only a couple of days away in the US but I thought all moms around the world could use a dose of motherly love on this Friday. Alright, I’m sure the dads will like this too. My husband first showed me this video on Facebook and I thought it was just too adorable not to share. Feel free to share it with moms who could use a little pick-me-up today (and really, who doesn’t?).

In this YouTube video, mother cat really shows us what moms, animal or human, are here for: comfort, reassurance, cuddling, and tender loving care. Looking at this video, I can’t help remembering what it was like to hold my kids when they were tiny sleeping babies. How sweet they smelled, how little and precious they felt, how peaceful they looked. Not a care or worry in the world, no pressure to perform or conform. Just eat, sleep, cuddle. Repeat very two hours. Even though I enjoy watching my kids grow up, I do miss those days sometimes.

Today I have one who still cuddles but only because he wants to marry me and the other who often is too busy playing to take a break and give me a hug. Sigh.

Happy Friday! Make sure you watch the whole video because it only gets better as it goes.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission urges consumers to stop using phil&teds metoo clip-on chairs

Stop using dangerous phil&teds metoo clip-on chairs

Stop using dangerous phil&teds metoo clip-on chairs

If you own a phil&teds metoo clip-on chair or know someone who does, please read this news carefully. What’s terrifying about this announcement is that it’s not an “official” recall. Why? Because phil&teds USA, the baby gear company, hasn’t agreed to a recall with terms acceptable to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Instead of simply recalling the defective and dangerous chairs, phil&teds decided to provide parents a repair kit. Unfortunately the US CPSC doesn’t find this kit acceptable at avoiding accidents. So the US CPSC is doing its best to protect consumers by urging parents to stop using the chairs all together.

What’s wrong with the phil&teds metoo clip-on chairs?  The best way to understand the dangers this product can cause to a child is to watch the US CPSC’s video about the phil&teds metoo clip-on chairs. Babies/children can get injured for a number of reasons:

  • The confusing installation instructions, which may cause the problems below
  • The chair can detach from the table, causing the baby/child to fall down on the floor
  • If one side of the chair detaches, the seat can tilt and trap the baby/child’s fingers in the hinge, crushing or possibly amputating those fingers

With so many parents using baby gear and relying on baby gear manufacturers to keep their children safe, it’s hard to believe a company would avoid a costly (but safe) recall. Phil&teds doesn’t seem to mind. Maybe it’s because they’ve already spent enough money on the phil&teds stroller recall a few months ago and they can’t afford to lose more money. The phil&teds stroller recall involved amputated fingers also – go figure.

I’m glad my kids are growing out of the little baby gear but this makes me wonder whose best interest is at heart – ours and our kids, or a company’s bottom line. This is putting a lot of pressure on parents to keep their babies and children safe. Who needs the additional burden of unsafe baby gear?

Please spread the word and let your friends know about this announcement. The US CSPC’s safety notice about the phil&teds metoo clip-on chairs, including which models are affected, is available on the agency’s website.

Wait, is that a double rainbow, in San Diego?

Double Rainbow in San Diego on September 30, 2010

Double Rainbow in San Diego on September 30, 2010

A couple of weeks ago, more specifically on September 30, 2010 (you can see how behind I am on writing my posts!), the San Diego area was hit by a major thunderstorm that lasted from morning to evening. You may think, what’s the big deal? So let me explain a few things about life in Southern California:

1) This was our first rain in about six months, so it always makes us feel a little giddy the first time it happens.
2) San Diego’s usual rain is medium to large-size rain drops, with no thunder.
3) Thunder and lightning are very rare and occur once or twice a year, tops.
4) Rainbows almost never happen. Yep, somehow you can see a rainbow every day in Ireland, but here, you’re lucky if you see one every other year.

That’s why September 30 is a day that will go down in history for most San Diego residents. Oh yeah, and I again managed not to have a camera on me to document it… Fortunately for me, there’s YouTube, where the people that are better equipped than me can capture these events!

That evening, I decided to take my youngest out while his brother and his dad attended a Padres game at Petco Park. That’s the day I took him to Barnes & Noble to read the latest and greatest Knuffle Bunny Free, followed by dinner for two at Panda Express (yummy chicken and green beans!).

As we were finishing dinner, I glanced at the mix of bright light and darkness coming from outside and told my son we’d have to look out for a rainbow. Not a second after I finished saying that, I saw it through the restaurant’s wide window. Oh my gosh, the largest rainbow I’d ever seen! We packed up our stuff and went outside. Standing in a light rain with our raincoat hoods on, we stared at not only the largest rainbow I’ve ever seen, but the largest DOUBLE rainbow I have seen in my whole life!!!

Here’s someone else’s video to prove that I’m not making this up!

Pretty cool, huh? Alright, let me go on. By walking a few more steps, we managed to see the double rainbow from one very end to the other. We literally saw each end rising from the ground to create the brightest full double rainbow ever recorded on this planet (seriously, it had to be!). It was so bright that I felt the urge to jump in my car and drive to the end of the rainbow as I could almost see where the giant pots of gold were shining from!

Now, the only words that came out of my mouth during this whole experience were “oh my gosh!”, “this never happens!”, this is so special!”, “a full double rainbow!”. How do I know? Because that’s what my son kept repeating the rest of the evening after we got home… Kids are quite perceptive, even at an early age!

That night, I couldn’t stop thinking about what I saw and the reason why this full double rainbow appeared in front of us. Some pretty big changes have occurred recently in my professional life (I’ll share at a later date) and the rain and the silver lining really looked as a sign that life is good and bright, and a gentle reminder that we must live every moment that we have in this world to the fullest.

I guess I’m not the only one who gets to question my life’s purpose when I see a full double rainbow. Remember the double rainbow guy on YouTube? Here’s Hungry Bear for you to enjoy if you missed it:

“Oh my god, a double rainbow all the way across the sky! What does this mean?” You go, Hungry Bear! I really understand how you felt on that day. I may even have cried like you if I had been by myself. After all, I had just read the ending of Knuffle Bunny Free less than an hour before that, so my tears were ready to come out anytime!

Hungry Bear is a normal guy with a great sense of humor who managed to gain his 15 minutes of fame by “remaking” his rainbow video for a Microsoft commercial. Take a look, this is really funny if you haven’t seen it!

As I said in a previous post (Happy birthday, little man!), “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” THAT was a breathless moment. I’ll leave you with one of my favorite rainbow songs, sung by our own San Diego neighbor, Jason Mraz.
