Category Archives: Deals and bargains

Who said there’s no such thing as free lunch? Or free dinner?

When you have two kids and you’re on a limited budget like me, you always look for deals and bargains out there to make it easier on your wallet. I always take advantage of museum discount tickets, or even better free Tuesdays at the San Diego museums, zoo memberships, food and restaurant coupons, and of course, our local library.

If you live in the USA, you’re aware a number of restaurants try to lure you in by offering free kids’ meals on specific days. It’s not that kids eat a lot and you’ll break the bank by taking them out, but most kids’ meals cost around $5 each, so multiply that by the number of kids and it quickly adds up to the final check. I always find myself looking for a good list of restaurant deals and the other day, I finally stumbled upon one that seems very complete, so I thought I’d share it with you. I found the list below at http://www.frugalliving.tv/free-stuff/kids-eat-free.html and I recommend you always contact the restaurant to make sure the free kids’ meal is available, since local restaurants may not participate in the national promotion.

You can also visit Kids Meal Deals website to search for a restaurant that offers free or cheap kids’ meals by zipcode. That’s a convenient tool when you’re away from home and not familiar with the restaurants around you.

So if you’re out and about and looking for a place to eat with your kids without breaking the bank, here is the list of restaurants that lets your kids eat free (or for very cheap) on specific days. Bon appetit!

Save 25% on Britax car seats and 10% on Graco strollers at Amazon

If you or someone you know is in the market for a car seat or a stroller, Amazon is having some greats deals on Britax car seats and Graco strollers for a limited-time. And with free shipping on those products, it’s a win-win situation! Feel free to pass this post along to parents who may benefit from the savings.

Britax Marathon convertible car seat

Britax Marathon convertible car seat

1) 25% off on select models of Britax convertible car seats and car boosters including:

I can’t recommend the Britax convertible car seats enough. We’ve owned two of them for 3 and 4 years respectively, and they still look like new. Our models were made in the USA and have done well with our kids growing into them. My oldest is 4 & 1/2 and he still uses his Britax Roundabout, even though he’s getting on the tall side. He’s not 40 pounds yet and I feel he’ll be safer if I can keep him in that seat for a little longer. However, I’m definitely taking advantage of this sale to buy both kids their booster seats ahead of time.

Graco Quattro stroller

2) 10% off or more select models of Graco stollers and car seats, including:

Graco Literider stroller
Graco Quattro Tour stroller
Graco Spree travel system
Graco Alano Flip It travel system
Graco Mosaic stroller
Graco Metrolite stroller
Graco Snugride infant car seat

We bought a Graco travel system for our first child and got to use also it for our second. When I sold it to a resale store, they were impressed with the great condition the stroller was in. I’m impressed too, because we used and abused that stroller almost every day for about 4 years, without any breakage or rip.

Unlike some of the baby gear I’ve recommended parents do research on before spending precious dollars, in my case I can say that both my Britax and Graco purchases have been worth every penny. Do you agree? What are some of your favorite brands of car seats and strollers, and why?

Give your unused or expired coupons to military families overseas

Give your unused or expired grocery coupons to military families overseas

I came across this program recently and thought I’d share it with as many people as I can. I’m not sure why this is such a well kept secret and everybody really should know about this.

Did you know that millions of dollars in coupons are unused every year? If you get the Sunday paper, you probably clip manufacturers’ coupons for your grocery shopping.  Often, you’ll throw away the coupons you’ll never use, and sometimes a coupon will expire before you actually get to use it. Gosh, I hate it when the register clerk seems to take pleasure in telling me that my $5 coupon expired the day before I meant to use it!

Now, you can STOP throwing away unused or expired coupons and instead give them away to military families through the Overseas Coupon Program. Military families stationed overseas don’t get the paper and therefore don’t get grocery coupons. However, the commissionaries will accept manufacturers’ coupons, up to six months after expiration date.

This program only applies to press printed coupons (not coupons printed on your home computer, which the families can do while overseas) and to national brands (as opposed to local). Here’s what you need to do to start your coupon donation program, by yourself, or as part of a group at work, school, church, etc:

  • Collect unused or expired coupons (no more than one to two months expired, as they take time to reach the overseas bases). Clip coupons to their exact size, to reduce the paper weight when shipping.
  • Sort coupons by “food” (i.e. human food) and “non-food” items (including diapers, cleaning supplies, pet supplies, medications, etc)
  • Total the batch of coupons in dollar amount and write that on a piece of paper. This helps the base keep track of how many dollars in coupons they receive.
  • Put each pile of coupons into a separate ziplock plastic bag and label them “food” and “non-food”.
  • Find a participating military base on the Overseas Coupon program website (http://ocpnet.org/Base%20List/BaseList1.htm). This list gets updated on a regular basis. Only mail coupons to bases who still accept donations as indicated on that page.
  • Mail your coupons through the post office using Parcel Post (cheaper but also slower). On the USPS custom’s form, list the contents as “manufacturers’ coupons” and the value of the package at “$0.00”, and check the “Gift” box. If you have a lot of coupons to send out, it may be best to choose Priority Mail as you can fit as much as you can in a specific envelope for one designated fee.

That’s it! This is a very simple way to help out our troops in a way you may not have heard of before. Please help me get the word out by directing people to this post(https://perfectingmotherhood.wordpress.com/2010/07/26/give-your-unused-or-expired-coupons-to-military-families-overseas) for instructions on how to donate their coupons to overseas military families! Thanks for sharing the good word, and happy clipping!

Best store to buy baby clothes, kid clothes and shoes

If you like this post and would like to share it with other moms, please provide them this link:
https://perfectingmotherhood.wordpress.com/2010/07/05/best-store-to-buy-baby-clothes-kid-clothes-and-shoes

Buzz Lightyear pajamas

With two young boys who often treat their clothes and shoes as commodities, I can’t tell you how many items we’ve had to throw away in just a few years. Of course, the cheapest way to get clothes and shoes is to obtain hand-me-downs from family or really nice friends (you can’t beat free!), or shop the Craigslist and Ebay ads, or frequent the resale stores. I would also recommend shopping the clothing clearance racks of major retailers and stock up on the bigger sizes to build up your inventory at a lower price. Shop in the store,or online with additional coupons you can find on sites like retailmenot.com and you can get some pretty sweet deals. I’ve managed to pay a buck or two for brand-new T-shirts and pants, not bad…

But the best deal of all is the Sears’ Kidvantage Club. If you’re a member already, you must be nodding right now. I found out about the program over a year ago, but I really wished someone had told me about it before. Here’s what you get by registering for the program (you only have to provide your phone number so remember which one you give out!):

  • A 15% discount for your next shopping trip every time you spend $100 on clothes or shoes
  • Everyone you know can buy clothes for your kids using that phone number, including aunts and uncles, grandparents, friends, etc, to help you reach that $100 purchase even faster.
  • Best wear-out guarantee: if your kid wears out the clothes or shoes you buy there before he/she outgrows them, Sears will replace them for free (same or similar item), and you only need to present a receipt for the national brand items, not the Sears’ brands. Warning: this only covers worn-out, not stained items – you can’t push your luck too far!.

Now, my only pet peeve about this program is that it doesn’t apply to online purchases, which I don’t understand because Sears should be able to tie in your store and online purchases with your phone number. But still, I don’t think you can beat that. With kids who love to make holes in the knees of their pants and the toe part of their shoes, I can’t think of any other store who lets me exchange them for free.

For more information, visit the Sears’ Kidvantage Club page and start saving!

If you know of other great savings deals on children’s clothing, toys, furniture, etc, please share it in the comments area of this page.
